Russia

12 plates of official data, 2006-2026

Every figure on this page comes from a publisher that names its definition, and every plate is regenerated from committed CSVs, so the charts and the numbers here cannot drift apart. Russia publishes almost everything in two versions and the plates keep them apart: Rosstat counts Crimea and Sevastopol from 2014 and excludes the four oblasts it claimed in 2022, while the UN series carries neither step; the headline CPI is December-to-December, while the World Bank's is an annual average; the fiscal panels are general government on the IMF's accrual accounts, with the federal cash budget beside them and never added to it. Since 2022 several official routes have closed — detailed customs statistics are suspended and the customs host does not answer, EMISS answers 403, and the federal spending breakdown has not been published since 2021 — and every one of those stops is a stated gap on the page rather than a chart drawn from somewhere else.

Where things stand

The plates

  1. Four panels on the Russian economy. Real GDP growth is negative in 2009, 2015, 2020 and 2022. GDP per person in dollars halves between 2013 and 2015. Two inflation lines, Rosstat's December-to-December and the World Bank's annual average, never merge. Unemployment is the ILO modelled estimate. Plate 01

    The Economy

Three contractions and a long stagnation: output fell 7.8% in 2009, 2.0% in 2015 and 1.4% in 2022, and the dollar value of a Russian income halved between 2013 and 2015 without anyone's rouble pay falling.

  2. Four panels on Russia's public finances. Revenue and expenditure as a share of GDP, expenditure peaking in 2020. The overall balance is in surplus in 2006–2008 and 2018–2019; the gold line is the federal non-oil-and-gas deficit, far below it. Gross debt stays under 20% of GDP and interest under 1.2%. Plate 02

    Public Finances

Three perimeters, never added together: general government on the IMF's accrual accounts, the federal cash budget, and the non-oil-and-gas deficit the Ministry leads with — 6.6% of GDP in 2025, against a headline federal deficit of 2.6%.

  3. Four panels on Russian federal spending. A stacked area of seven functional groups as a share of GDP, 2006–2021, and social protection against everything else. Whole-economy investment holds near 20–23% of GDP. Public investment is pending: no official government investment series is staged. Plate 03

    Spending

The federal budget spends about 18% of GDP, and social policy is its largest single function. Pensions are paid through the Social Fund outside this perimeter, and the functional breakdown itself has not been published since 2021.

  4. Four panels on Russian trade. Exports and imports of goods and services as a share of GDP, exports falling from 33.7% in 2006 to 18.2% in 2025. The balance is in surplus every year. Export destinations are pending; the lens converts the surplus to dollars, peaking near US$290bn in 2022. Plate 04

    Trade

A surplus every year of the window, and a shrinking one: exports fell from 33.7% of GDP in 2006 to 18.2% in 2025. The customs service suspended its detailed release in 2022, so the partner cut is not on the page.

  5. Four panels on Russian markets. The key rate and inflation, with the 20% emergency rate of 28 February 2022 marked. The 10-year yield rises to 15.3% by 2026. The rouble falls from 27 per dollar in 2006 to 83 in 2025. The MOEX index in dollars falls from 100 in 2006 to 67 in 2025. Plate 05

    Markets

The key rate went from 9.50% to 20.00% on 28 February 2022 and back within three weeks, then to 21% in 2024. The official rouble rate was an administered price for part of 2022, and the exchange's dollar index has never recovered its 2006 level.

  6. Four panels on Russian credit. Household debt rises from 8.2% of GDP in 2006 to 21–22% from 2020. The new-loan rate falls to 10.6% in 2021 and rises to 18.6% in 2025. Non-performing loans fall to 4.5% in 2023, where the series stops. The margin over the key rate turns negative. Plate 06

    Credit

Household debt is small for a country at this income — 21% of GDP — but it became expensive: new rouble loans cost 18.6% in 2025 against a 19.1% key rate, and the margin over the policy rate inverted.

Poverty on the national line falls to 7.2% in 2024, with the World Bank's upper-middle-income line far below. The minimum wage is pending. The lens chains the CPI to about 4.5 times the 2006 level. Plate 07

    People

Inequality fell for fifteen years — the Gini from 42.3 to 33.0 — and poverty on the national line from 15.2% to 7.2%. Prices, meanwhile, are 4.5 times their 2006 level, which is what a rouble's worth means across this window.

  9. Four panels on Russian demography. Two population lines indexed to 2006: Rosstat's steps up 2.7 million between 2014 and 2015 and the UN's does not. Fertility falls from 1.78 in 2015 to 1.42 in 2024. Births fall below deaths from 2016. Natural increase is negative every year. Plate 09

    Demography

146.1m people on Rosstat's perimeter, a fertility rate of 1.42 and deaths above births every year since 2016. The 2014 step in the population line is territory — Crimea and Sevastopol — and the UN series does not carry it.

Violence fell by two thirds in fifteen years: the homicide rate from 20.0 to 6.8 per 100,000, suicide from 41.4 to 21.4. Every one of these series stops before the war, and the national publishers do not answer.
